Rio Tinto

The Rio Tinto-or Iberus, Urium, Luxia as it was called by different peoples throughout history peopled his famous riberas- since Phoenician times to be linked to the mineral wealth of the area, it is closely united people and people of Berrocal, an important part of its course runs through his term, being practically the only point from which you can easily access it before reaching the plains of the countryside without doubt the more spectacular.

His interest is given by the peculiar color of its waters, bright red reminiscent of the color of red wine, but not the only color of the river, which develops a variety of colors on the runway and margins due to precipitation mineral containing not wasted born in the mass of ore famous Rio Tinto mines, mines that have been exploited for 5,000 years, going back to the age of metals and has given the region a personality itself from the many megalithic remains, tartésicos, Romans to the British legacy, with the railroad, the Corta Atalaya or the same English Bellavista neighborhood.

Does not exist in the world a river with the characteristics of Tinto, always it had thought that metals containing its waters and the high acidity made life impossible, but the intense research activity carried out over the river and subsoil in recent years have determined to contain a variety of organisms adapted to an environment that was thought impossible for life until not long ago. In recent years the National Center for Astrobiology and NASA are working together to discover the workings of life on the river and the possibility that it develops underground in a kind of underground bio-reactor. The importance of this work is largely due to similarities in environmental conditions of life in the river ecosystem, with the surface and subsurface of Mars and development of equipment and experiments to be included in future missions NASA. Recent experiments have demonstrated the survivability of some agencies red river conditions similar to life on the planet.

Rio Tinto and its banks, including the entire municipality of Berrocal has been declared a protected landscape and will become part of the European Geoparks Network. From Berrocal you can easily access the river through road and can go in almost its entire length comfortably since the historic mining railway Rio Tinto takes place mostly accompanying the river which increases the interest of these routes and allows enjoy the scenery Tinto comfortably strolling the old road with its bridges, tunnels and still largely preserved stations and enjoying both the forests and mountains that surround it.
